Chocolate and Caffeine

March is Caffeine Awareness Month.  How better to kick it off than by talking about chocolate and caffeine.  Quite a few people stay away from chocolate because  they think it has too much caffeine.  Yes, there is caffeine in chocolate, but only in very small amounts. For those who need to avoid caffeine completely, this is very bad news!  However, for those who can tolerate caffeine, the amount in chocolate is not likely to be a problem unless you consume mass quantities of chocolate on a regular basis.

Caffeine will be higher in dark chocolate since there is more chocolate mass present in the bar.  Milk chocolate measures at about 5 milligrams of caffeine per ounce, while dark or unsweetened can measure between 5-10 milligrams caffeine per ounce of chocolate.  So you can have a reference for perspective, the Amano Chocolate Dos Rios bar is 2.0 ounces per bar.

When comparing this to an average cup of coffee we see that this is a miniscule amount, which contains between 100-150 milligrams of caffeine per 8-ounce cup (depending on brand and roast).  That’s 10-15% more caffeine than found in an ounce of chocolate.  You would have to eat at least 10 ounces of dark chocolate to equate the caffeine of one average 8-ounce cup of coffee.  That would be the same as eating five (5) full-sized Amano bars in one sitting!

What about tea, you say?  Green tea is much lower in caffeine than coffee.  It only contains 15-40 milligrams of caffeine per 8-ounce cup.  Black tea has an average of 50 milligrams per 8-ounce cup.

As you see, chocolate is lower in caffeine than tea and coffee.  Especially when you are appreciating quality chocolate from Drexelius Chocolates!  The gourmet chocolate Drexelius Chocolates carries provides such wonderful flavor and enjoyment that you do not have to eat an entire bar to feel satisfied.  Ergo…less caffeine is consumed.
