Original Beans Cru Virunga hails from the Eastern Congo. Maybe you’ve heard of the civil war, rebel fighting or Rwandan massacres? Rebels hiding in the jungles use valuable minerals and natural resources like timber and gold to fund their wars. This area is home to large areas of rain forest and rare animal species, like the beautiful gorilla which this chocolate bar is determined to protect.
A gourmet chocolate bar came from this place? Yes, and if you haven’t tried it then you are missing out. The previous Cru Virunga bar was delicately sweet with mild berry notes. I loved that bar. Let’s taste this 2011 Cru Virunga bar from Original Beans and see how it compares:
- This 70% dark chocolate comes out of the package with a smooth, glossy sheen. The aroma is earthy, hints of juicy, dark red cherries and is followed by a dry tobacco note. The bar has a super crisp snap and melts cleanly in my mouth without a sticky or tacky feel. This bar does not bite…it caresses my taste buds. Dark, smooth and sensual. Low acidity with an extremely long finish.
Congo is one of the most troubled nations on the planet and one of the poorest, but maybe cacao can restore the area.
