On Memorial Day the United States takes a day off of work. Most will use the day to catch up with friends and family or maybe to take a quick vacation. How did it all start?
The Memorial Day we celebrate started off as a way to honor the patriotic dead of the Civil War by decorating their graves. The first observation was held in spring of 1866. It was first known as Decoration Day, but was later renamed to Memorial Day in 1882.
Waterloo, NY was recognized as the “Birthplace of Memorial Day” in May of 1966 by the United States Government. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Medal of Honor, which President Abraham Lincoln signed into law in 1861. It is our nation’s highest award for military valor.
